Ryan researches how strategy is practised in non-corporate settings, such as charities and user communities. He specialises in LGBT+ organisations.

He also contributes to the development of set-theoretic methods, such as Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) and Coincidence Analysis (CNA).
