Sarah is a member of the Information & Communication theme research group within the Institute for Management Governance and Society (IMAGES) Research Institute. Her research interests focus on women's use of the media, both contemporary and historical. In particular she has published on gendered use of blogs; Mumsnet; and Facebook. Her book 'Why blog: motivations for blogging' was published in 2010 by Chandos & Woodhead Publishing.

She has also published on the subjects of the suffragettes' use of the media, the Scottish suffrage movement and women's lives during the First World War.
