Sarah Zawacki is a PhD student at Durham University, and her research focuses on the health-related experiences of Central and Eastern European Roma migrants in the UK. This involved a lengthy period of fieldwork within Roma community organisations, during which she worked as a volunteer health advocate to gain insight into Roma community members' day-to-day interactions with health care institutions. Her study explores the health-related narratives that Roma individuals construct, and the ways in which the stories people choose to tell about their health shed light on their wider perceptions of identity and equality in UK society.
