Simon completed his PhD at the University of Amsterdam in 2003, with his thesis based on the (yet to be built) ATLAS detector at the LHC and a study on using it for possible searches for the Higgs particle. He then moved to the University of Oxford to work on the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (the experiment for which Art McDonald won the physics Nobel Prize in 2015). His research has concentrated on neutrino physicss and related subject since then. In 2007, he joined the University of Sussex.
