Senior Lecturer in French and Communication, University of Bath

Dr Steve Wharton is a social and cultural historian with particular interests in LGBT activism in Britain and France, and contemporary political communication.

As Departmental Erasmus and Assistantships Director, he is responsible for managing the undergraduate student experience in respect of preparation for the Year Abroad in these two areas. He is also Co-Director of Routes into Languages South West, based at the University.

He works across the University at many levels, being a Life Member of the University Court and an elected member of both the University Council and Senate, and having served as Chair of Academic Assembly, Director of Undergraduate Programmes in PoLIS, and Director of Studies for Programmes in Modern Languages and European Studies as well as International Management and Modern Languages.

In his spare time he is Chair of Directors of Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution, Honorary Vice Secretary of the Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France, and a UCU-appointed Director of the Universities Superannuation Scheme.

In 2012 the French government made him Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques for services to French culture.
