Reader, Politics and International Relations Group, Leeds Beckett University

Dr Steve Wright is a Reader in the Politics and International Relations Group at Leeds Beckett University. For many years he was Director of the Omega Foundation, which worked for the European Commission to track the sale of weapons technologies to authoritarian regimes.

Wright authored the European Parliament Science & Technology Options(STOA) Panel report on 'An Appraisal of the Technologies of Political Control', which led to European discussions of the implications of mass surveillance by the NSA, 20 years before the revelations of Edward Snowden. Its recommendations led to the recent EC ban on exports of torture and execution technologies from Europe as well as the first historical report from the European Library Parliamentary Archive - 'The Echelon Affair.'
