Director, Hunt Lab for Intelligence Research, The University of Melbourne

Dr. Tim van Gelder is an Enterprise Research Fellow in the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne. He is also Director of the new Hunt Laboratory for Intelligence Research.

He is a cognitive scientist and applied epistemologist specialising in techniques for developing clarity and rational consensus around complex issues. He has a BA from the University of Melbourne, a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, and taught at Indiana University before returning to Australia on an ARC QEII Fellowship.

His academic research has developed from work in the philosophical foundations of cognitive science to critical thinking education, intelligence augmentation, and deliberative democracy.
