Dr Trevor Chinn, New Zealand’s leading glaciologist, started work on glaciers in 1965 measuring the snow of the Tasman Glacier. He worked with the Alpine Processes Group, Water and Soil Division, Ministry of Works, Christchurch then DSIR, then GNS. The work on New Zealand Alpine Processes continued, with glacial research on the Ivory Glacier, and hydrology and glaciology of the Antarctic Dry Valleys. From 1996 the glaciology work continued from his Lake Hawea base on contract to NIWA – over 45 years of research to date.
