Umut Parmaksız received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Bristol in 2015. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Bristol, School of Sociology Politics and International Studies.

His research interests are postsecularism, secular identity, political secularism, Turkish politics and religion in the public sphere.
