Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor of Applied Mathematics, University of Otago

Professor Squire's academic career began at Cambridge University, where he completed a PhD and a postdoctoral fellowship, followed by a research position for several years. In 1987 Vernon emigrated to New Zealand to take up the position of Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Otago in Dunedin. He became Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in 1996, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Sciences in 2004 and Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic in 2010. His specialty is modelling sea ice / ocean wave interactions but he has also carried out many field experiments to collect data to validate models in the the Arctic and Antarctica and sub-polar seas and lakes.
