My teaching and research focus on the intersection of argument, public deliberation and science. I have written widely about the history of public participation in the US, as well as communication pedagogy. His books include Democracy as Discussion (2007), The Ongoing Conversation: 100 Years of Communication Studies and, with Robert Danisch, Beyond Civility: The Competing Obligations of Citizenship.
