William L. Iggiagruk Hensley

Visiting Distinguished Professor, University of Alaska Anchorage

I am Inupiaq from Kotzebue, Alaska. I attended the Bureau of Indian Affairs elementary school in my home town and graduaed from boarding school in Tennessee. I graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Political Science. I spent ten years in the Alaska legislature, wrote a research paper on the issue of who owned Alaska in 1966 (I claimed that Alaska Natives still owned it). I served as President of the Alaska Federation of Natives and President of NANA Regional Corporation. I served as Commerce commissioner and wrote a memoir "Fifty Miles f rom Tomorrow" (Farrar, Straus & Giroux)
