Yuval Neria

Yuval Neria is Professor of Medical Psychology at the Departments of Psychiatry and Epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center, and Director of Trauma and PTSD at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. His research ranges from studying the mental health consequences of high impact trauma including combat, captivity, terrorism and disasters, examination of determinants of resilience and effective functioning, to translational research aiming to identify underlying neural and behavioral mechanisms of PTSD, and developing neuroscience-informed treatments.

Dr. Neria has led and collaborated on numerous epidemiological, clinical, and neuroimaging studies in PTSD. His studies have been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), NARSAD and private foundations since 2002.

Currently, his lab is using functional magnetic resonance Imaging (fMRI) and a number of novel paradigms aiming to identify brain and behavioral markers of deficient fear conditioning, extinction, and fear generalization in trauma exposed individuals, and to probe brain and behavioral markers of clinical improvement in patients receiving treatment for PTSD.

Dr. Neria has authored more than 170 articles and book chapters and has edited three textbooks published in Cambridge University Press. He is the Editor in Chief of the Journal Disaster Health.
