Rebates help small businesses to embrace green behaviour

Australian governments should extend rebates and other incentives available to big business to encourage environmentally sustainable behaviour among smaller companies, according to a new study.

The survey of 350 managers showed that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) rarely buy thier electricity from sustainable energy providers, due to a lack of financial incentives, and generally had poor waste-management practices.

Researchers said that environmental behaviour at SMEs would change if the companies were given access to education programmes and rebates from federal, state and local governments.
