Regrowing everything from head to tail

A seldom-studied gene is critical for planarian flatworms to regenerate their bodies from almost any injury, including decapitation.

Planarian flatworms can regrow any missing cell or tissue (muscle, neurons, epidermis, eyes, even a new brain) and the newly-discovered gene, called notum, helps the worm determine which body part is needed.
