Secret to female longevity in mutant DNA

Mutations in the DNA of mitochondria appear to help explain why women live, on average, longer than men.

Genetic variations across mitochondria are reliable predictors of life expectancy in males, but not in females. 



The results suggest that the mitochondrial mutations uncovered will generally cause faster male ageing across the animal kingdom.
