Soil nitrite cleanses the air

Researchers have discovered that soil nitrite is released into the air in the form of nitrous acid (HONO). The atmosphere gets better at cleaning itself once this nitrous acid is released.

Researchers used a laboratory setting to determine soil nitrite’s ability to produce considerable amounts of HONO.

The release of HONO from arable soils is particularly important in developing countries because of the increased use of fertilizers and soil acidification. The more acid the soil is, the more HONO is produced.
