Tadpoles play an essential role

Tadpoles may play an important role in maintaining the ecosystems of freshwater streams, linking water species with the surrounding riparian habitat.

An ongoing study from James Cook University has found that tadpole interactions as consumers and prey help to balance the structure and function of streams.

The tadpole’s role in nature has been little-researched, but a drop in amphibious numbers worldwide has prompted the study into the potential effects of their loss.
