Tectonic plate model could help predict earthquakes

Researchers at Monash University’s School of Geosciences have developed a three dimensional model that uses physics to predict the behaviour of tectonic plates.

The model was developed by examining the formation of the Andes mountain range 45 million years ago.

Understanding what forces drive plate tectonics could help scientists develop a way to predict earthquakes, the formation of mountain ranges and the opening and closing of oceans.
