Teens misuse painkillers

One in ten teenagers or young adults admit to misusing prescription medication to get high, taking more than the prescribed dosage or taking other people’s prescriptions.

The University of Michigan surveyed 2,135 young adults aged from 14 to 20 years old, admitted to Michigan’s emergency departments during the 2010-2011 period.

Researchers found 10.4% of those surveyed had misused painkillers in the past year, shedding light on epidemic of overdoses resulting in more deaths than road accidents in some states.
