Testosterone overprescribed

Testosterone prescriptions have expanded since 2006 due to promotional activity, a study in the MJA suggests.

This has resulted in older men overusing the hormone as an anti-ageing tonic and as a treatment for sexual dysfunction.

The study supports the idea that diseases associated with ageing, and not ageing itself, affects testosterone levels in older men. Authors say new uses of testosterone should be restricted to clinical trials.
