The surface can be deceiving

Deep cracks in soil left as a result of extended dry periods can remain hidden underground long after they disappear from the surface.

Researchers from the University of New South Wales have found that water flows much faster through these underground pathways, diverting nutrients and pesticides rapidly away from crops’ root zones.
