How is scholarship being done via the medium of comics?  Comics can enable scholarship to be disseminated in accessble, reworked form for a wider audience; and can aid in ‘making learning fun’ for younger students or interested amateurs – but how does graphic narrative work as a way of thinking, as a way of data gathering, as a way of organising and enacting the research itself: a tool for scholars?

We will explore this question with speakers from the Applied Comics NetworkGraphic Medicine, and in a practical workshop with other comics creators. This exciting event includes lunch and a wine reception and is FREE of charge but places must be booked in advance via EventBrite

This event is generously supported by the University of Sussex Doctoral School’s Researcher-Led (RLI) Fund and Sussex Centre for Cultural Studies.

Practical Workshop led by Pen Mendonca and Louisa Parker, and Ian Williams presenting on Graphic Medicine. Sketch notes by Paul F Davies.

It was lovely to see such a range of people attending; those we know, and those who joined us fresh on the day. Creators, thinkers and visualisers all!

Participants admire one another’s handiwork in Pen Mendonca and Louisa Parker’s practical comics interviewing workshop — listening and drawing others’ experience.

Thanks also to our speakers, workshop leaders, and those who made the day possible.

We look forward to seeing everyone at future events.

Graphic Scholarship: Theory and Practice

Just a week to go before our 2016 event at the University of Sussex, Graphic Scholarship: Theory and Practice. We have two fascinating panels of speakers discussing how comics can be used to conduct research, and there’s a practical workshop in the middle of the afternoon — materials will be available, but you’re welcome to bring your preferred drawing tools too!

The Graphic Scholarship Programme is now available for attendees to view. We’re hugely excited and look forward to seeing you on the day. Registration is from 12pm in the Jubilee building. There will be lunch when you arrive, coffee and tea during the afternoon, and a wine reception to end the day. It is a symposium after all…
