Understanding microbiomes may reduce fertiliser reliance

Microbial communities living in and on plant roots can boost the health, growth and defence mechanisms of plants.

Research demonstrates that the microbial communities help to move nutrients in and out of the plant’s roots.

The study could help develop plant probiotics in order to improve plant health, possibly reducing or even removing reliance on fertilisers and pesticides.
