VIDEO: Michelle Grattan on budget savings

The government and Labor have offered up competing packages of budget savings. The question of whether they can meet halfway will be a test for both sides.

Michelle Grattan tells University of Canberra acting vice-chancellor Frances Shannon that Bill Shorten’s savings measures were an effort to show that Labor has plans. “In a sense he’s still behaving as though the election is a few Saturdays off. He’s out every day and throwing out proposals,” she says.

“I think that we will see the opposition pass the A$6.6 billion worth of savings that are in this omnibus bill that the government’s going to put forward. They are measures that the Coalition proposed but Labor accepted or banked the savings before the election.”
