Why are nanoparticles used in sunscreens?

Most sunscreens contain a mixture of active ingredients to give “broad-spectrum” protection. But metal oxide nanoparticles, and particularly zinc oxide, protect users from a broader UV range than any of the molecular UV-absorbers, according to CSIRO researchers.
