Why rejection hurts

The emotional ‘hurt’ of breaking up might be less of a metaphor than you think. A study by US researchers used a sample of participants who had recently been through an unwanted romantic breakup to study the brain activation patterns involved in social rejection. The researchers asked participants to look at a picture of their latest ex, and then compared their brain activity to that seen when experiencing actual physical pain.
