Women vital to the Arab Spring

Women played a central role in the 2011 Arab Spring through their influential use of social media.

Courtney Radsch of Rice University has investigated how women transcended traditional gender roles and communication methods to organise both virtual and street demonstrations.

Her research assessed the context of political rights and the public sphere in Egypt, along with records of sexual violence against women and post-revolution developments.
