20 million year-old koala species discovered

Palaeontologists from the University of New South Wales have discovered an extinct species of koala that lived in northern Australia 20 million years ago.

The koala’s skull is much smaller in comparison the modern koala, but was more resemblant of one unlike other extinct koala species, which were more possum-like in appearance.

The koala species was names Litokoala dicksmithi, in honour of Australia icon Dick Smith.
