Black hole makes meal of star

A star that wandered too close to a supermassive black hole has been observed in various stages of decay. The star, which lives 500 million light years from Earth, was initially detected in 2006 and was seen to increase in brightness over the following year.

But when the star was observed in February of this year, it’s brightness was found to have decreased significantly, indicating to astronomers that a supermassive black hole was involved in the star’s destruction.
