Cancer patients use music to reduce anxiety

A new Cochrane systematic review shows that music is able to reduce anxiety, help reduce pain and improve quality of life for cancer patients.

The study undertaken by Dr. Joke Bradt, Drexel University, used pre-recorded music to improve the psychological and physical well-being of patients.

A total of 1,891 patients across 30 trials were studied, with results showing that music was able to reduce anxiety. Not all trials produced the same outcome with some showing a larger benefit than others.

Results also showed that quality of life in patients may be improved by music therapy. The trials included patients with different types of cancer.
