Community gardens in the UK may help address the growing food shortage, new research shows.
The study examined soil samples from both farming sites and community areas including local parks and gardens, known as allotment sites. Researchers found the soil was much healthier at the allotment sites than areas that had been heavily farmed.
Lead researcher Jill Edmondson says policymakers should promote local food production rather than conventional agriculture, in order to meet the growing food demand in a sustainable way.
