Consumers increasingly seek locally sourced foods

Consumers are more likely to choose locally sourced products when shopping, and define “local” as foods from their region, town or city, with a distinctively authentic or rustic look.

Researchers from Queensland University of Technology Business School found more than 80% of consumers would purchase local products if they were available in supermarkets. Only 20% of consumers believed supermarkets were putting locally sourced foods on their shelves.

The research further suggested consumers were less concerned about price and convenience of locally sourced foods, and more concerned with quality and safety.
