New scanning technique to benefit mental health research

A new method of scanning laboratory rats will open the way for new experiments looking at the links between brain and behavioural function.

Animal imaging techniques, such as positron emission tomography (PET), are almost always performed using anaesthesia to keep the animal still because any movement prevents useful 3D PET images from being reconstructed.

The new PET technique will allow researchers to scan rats in motion, doing away with the need for anaesthesia.

The study of diseases such as Parkinson’s and schizophrenia are among those which could potentially benefit from the development of the new scanning method.
