Dating galactic events using stellar light and sound

A team of international astronomers has developed a more precise way to deduce the ages of stars and to pinpoint when our galaxy’s big events happened.

The approach harnesses both the light and sound waves from the stars, providing astronomers with a celestial version of the carbon-dating.

Dr Luca Casagrande, from the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, who led the study, said the development will help study the properties of ancient stars and better understand the formation and evolution of the Milky Way.
