Decisions harder as white matter ages

A reduction in white matter pathways has been linked to poor decision making in aging people, a brain map study has found.

White matter has been linked to processing speed and attention span in the brain.

The white matter pathways examined in the study connected the thalamus to the decision making and the emotional and motivational sections of the brain.

Researchers believe this is the first study to link white matter to learning and decision making.
