Explosive news on Rangitoto volcano

The Rangitoto volcano in Auckland is older and more active than previously thought.

Research from the University of Auckland shows Rangitoto didn’t just erupt a couple of times, but did so semi-continuously over 1,000 years.

It is also 1,000 years older than prior estimates, which put the volcano’s age at between 500 and 550 years.

The study has challenged scientific understanding of basaltic volcanoes’ lifetime and behaviour, and could provide insights into the potential risks posed by similar volcanoes in the region.
