Flash photography safe for White’s seahorse

Flash photography has no significant effect on the behaviour, movement or site persistence of the White’s seahorse.

This indicates significant potential to safely use underwater photography in seahorse studies. Scientists are investigating whether this may replace tagging for long-term ecological studies.

In 2011 flash photography of seahorses was banned in the UK as a precautionary measure to protect the seahorse’s advanced eye structure.
