Heading for unprecedented marine extinctions

An international meeting of marine scientists brought together to consider the cumulative impact of multiple stressors on the ocean has found that “the world’s ocean is at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history”.

The 27 participants found that not only are we already experiencing declines in species to the point of commercial extinction but we are now facing the loss of entire marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, within a single generation.
