The Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) distinguishes itself as a leader in conducting research and training of specialized human resources in the fields of Social Anthropology, History, Ethnohistory and Linguistics, which have been Together with other social sciences such as Geography, Sociology and Political Science. These activities are carried out in the strict pursuit of quality, with scientific rigor and within a framework of academic freedom, with a national articulation from specialized teams in various regions of the country, and a growing international linkage.

The CIESAS has seven venues, the largest venue is located in Mexico City. It also has five Regional Units (Gulf, Pacific, South, West, Southeast and Peninsular) and a Regional Program (Northeast), with about 160 researchers distributed in their headquarters and with them contributes to generate border knowledge associated directly with Needs from the local to the global scale.

In CIESAS, combining basic research with applied and participatory research, quality research is carried out, and in the last years, it has been involved in the evaluation of public policies. As of 2008, eight postgraduate courses are taught, focused on the training of professionals.

The rigorous research, specialized training and high quality of the knowledge generated, is disseminated through its more than 1250 publications, which have given a distinctive stamp to CIESAS with acknowledgments that go beyond national borders.

The CIESAS also has three laboratories: Audiovisual, Geographic Information Systems and the Language and Culture “Víctor Franco”. To these is added the Center of Social Comptrollership and Studies of Democratic Construction. This Center participates in seven Chairs: Human Geography Elisée Reclus, Ángel Palerm, Arturo Warman, Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán, Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira, Jorge Alonso and the Mexico Chair.
