‘Man’s best friend’ helps make friends

Research from the University of Western Australia shows that pet owners are more likely to make new friends in a new neighbourhood.

Surveying 2700 people in Perth and three US cities, researchers saw that social relations improved amongst strangers with some defining their neighbours as “friends”.

The benefits of dog-walking, which included an increase in physical activity and an improvement in people’s perceptions of neighbourhood safety, were also noted as part of the survey.
