More information needed on medical devices that fail

Medical devices such as pacemakers, breast implants and prosthetics contributed to 295 deaths and more than two thousand serious injuries reported to the TGA between January 2000 and December 2011.

But according to the new research fewer than half of incidents involving medical devices that were reported to the TGA led to an investigation. The reason for this is unclear and requires further research.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration is Australia’s Regulatory Agency for medical drugs and devices.
