New pacemakers run on heartbeat

Next-gen pacemakers could be powered by a person’s heartbeat rather than batteries, increasing their efficiency.

The new devices would harvest energy from the heart’s reverberations, potentially generating eight times the energy normally required to run a pacemaker.

The only way to replace existing pacemaker batteries is surgery, which currently has to be performed every five to ten years.
