S. Travis Waller is a Professor and Head of School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNSW. He previously held positions of Deputy Dean (Research), Advisian Chair and Evans & Peck Chair of Transportation Innovation as well as the Founding Director and Executive Director of the Research Centre for Integrated Transport Innovation (rCITI). rCITI developed a pioneering research pillar on "Bio-Secure Mobility" led by former staff member and former student, Lauren Gardner, who went on to develop the COVID-19 dashboard at Johns Hopkins University.

Travis was previously on faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). While at Austin, he was the Founding Director for a U.S. National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center focused on planning for the future transformation of electric vehicles on society's infrastructure. He has previously been named one of the top 100 innovators in science and engineering in the world under 35 years of age (2003), received the U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER award (2004), and the Fred Burggraf (2009) and Pyke Johnson (2019) awards, both from the U.S. Transportation Research Board (a division of the U.S. National Academies).
