Nuclear Engineering Innovation Fellow, University of Manchester

Dr. Leay has worked at the University of Manchester’s Dalton Cumbrian Facility since 2013. Prior to that she obtained her PhD in the field of atomistic simulations and also worked in the nuclear industry, mainly for The UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), based on Sellafield Site. She has over 10 years’ experience across both the nuclear industry and academia.

Her research interests lie in the development of a whole system approach to the management of nuclear waste - including immobilisation, containment, storage systems, wasteform evolution and package monitoring during storage, as well as underpinning information for safety case and disposability assessments. Being based at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility, a unique radiation science laboratory which houses a high dose gamma irradiator and a dual beam particle accelerator system, her research naturally leans towards the radiation effects in these systems.
