Ade Prastyani received her medical degree from Universitas Indonesia in 2010, and practiced as a physician in a rural Community Health Centre in South Sulawesi province. She has completed her postgraduate degree with the Australian National University in Culture, Health and Medicine.

Her expanding interest in critical public health and global health inequity has been influenced by her experience working for the Centre for Health Research of the Faculty of Public Health Universitas Indonesia (CHR-UI), the Health Work Group of the National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K), as well as being involved in the project on Indonesian mental health care carried out by the University of Sydney.

The research project adopts a visual anthropology method and is funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund.
