Ahmet T. Kuru is Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University. He received his PhD from the University of Washington and held a postdoc position at Columbia University.

His 2019 book, Islam, Authoritarianism, and Underdevelopment: A Global and Historical Comparison (Cambridge University Press) received American Political Science Association's International History and Politics Section Award. This book was/is being translated into Arabic, Bengali, Bosnian, Dutch, French, Indonesian, Kyrgyz, Malay, Persian, and Somali.

Kuru is also the author of award-winning "Secularism and State Policies toward Religion: The United States, France, and Turkey" (Cambridge, 2009) and the co-editor (with Alfred Stepan) of "Democracy, Islam, and Secularism in Turkey" (Columbia, 2012).

Kuru has given interviews to and written op-eds in various media outlets, including BBC World, Euronews, France 24, BBC India, Al Jazeera Arabic, Al Jazeera Balkans, RFE/RL, Yahoo News, National Interest, Esprit, The New Arab, Daily Beast, openDemocracy, Al-Ahram, and Tehran Times on Islam and politics.
