Academic Research Specialist, University of California, San Francisco

Akua is an Academic Research Specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. She received her DrPH and MPH (Disease prevention/health promotion) in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. She received her Bachelors of Arts from Cornell University. Prior to her graduate studies at Columbia, she worked as an Assistant Researcher at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine on a community based participatory research project aimed at preventing and managing diabetes in East Harlem. Over the years, she has worked on a number of research studies in the areas of sexual health and HIV/AIDS focusing on general and LGBTQ populations. Akua's research interests are broadly in examining sociocultural understandings of sexuality, gender, rights and health in Africa. Her research has been supported by the Fulbright Program, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
