Chairman, Influenza Specialist Group and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow, Federation University Australia

Alan Hampson is the Chairman of the Influenza Specialist Group - a not for profit group of Australian doctors and scientists which works in conjunction with key Australian professional and consumer groups, and also with Australian departments of Health, in educational activities regarding influenza, its prevention and treatment.

A virologist who has 50 years of experience working with influenza in a career spanning basic research, vaccine development and as Deputy Director of a WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on influenza, he has been active in influenza pandemic preparedness planning and response in Australia and with WHO. Since retirement from the WHO Centre in 2005 he has remained active in various advisory roles with WHO and the Australian Government and as Editor in Chief of the international journal ‘Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses’ from its commencement in 2006 until 2014 (now continuing as a Senior Editor).

Alan was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Medicine (University of Melbourne) in 2006, the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2007 and was made a Fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology in 2007. He has for many years been an adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University through the Gippsland Campus which is now in the process of continuation with the Federation University of Australia.
