Alex Bitterman

Alex Bitterman MArch, PhD is Professor in the Department of Architecture & Design at SUNY Alfred State and Adjunct Research Professor in the School of Architecture & Planning at the University at Buffalo.

Dr. Bitterman is an author, presenter, designer, administrator, and advocate.

His most recent book, The Life and Afterlife of Gay Neighborhoods: Renaissance and Resurgence (ISBN-13: 978-3-030-66073-4) was published in 2021 by SpringerNature. He is the founding editor of Multi: the Journal of Responsible Architecture and Design (http://www.multi-journal.org, ISSN: 1942-3527), an associate editor of Critical Studies in Men’s Fashion, and is also the author of The College Question: Why College as We Know It Isn’t Working for the Millennial Generation, (ISBN-13: 978-149-21199-82), a critical exemption of higher education and a practical guide for future generations of college students. His Textbook, Design Survey: an Introduction to the Design Professions (ISBN -10: 0-536-51736-3) is now in its third edition.

Dr. Bitterman is an advocate for LGBTQ+ equality and equity. He is the principal partner and owner of four socially-focused businesses including Pips Petals, which provides pacemaker comfort pads to women around the world, and k629 design which partners with selected clients around the world to engage socially-responsible design to help those in need.

Dr. Bitterman has made more than fifty conference presentations, and various media appearances including radio and television. He is the proud author of more than a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. Commentary and interviews with Dr. Bitterman have appeared in National Geographic, The Advocate, The Toronto Star. He was a keynote speaker at the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in 2017.
